My Experience of Group Study Exchange

What a fantastic experience it was, spending four weeks in South Carolina as part of a team of four Healthcare Professionals and a Rotarian team leader who returned just over a week ago as very good friends.

The southern hospitality, warm welcomes and being made to feel a part of so many families was surreal. My new friends (extended family) have been able to keep in touch since my return with facebook, e.mail and hopefully in the future the odd visit.

Now that i am back at work my enthusiasm to implement changes that i have observed whilst in the USA is immense. I have had the opportunity to have several conversations with my manager who was a great support to me prior to this trip and is as keen to listen to my ideas as i am to talk.

A few interesting differences in the hospital facilities which i am sure could be a success here!!! were the valet parking, the spacious private rooms with en-suite facilities and and flat screen TV's on the walls. The phrase 5* hotels came to mind several times, during our visits.

Customer care played a vital role in the nurses day, the 10-2 rule was outstanding if you are in a corridor and within 10ft of someone you acknowledge them i.e a smile if you are within 2ft you speak i.e. good morning etc. Each nurse i spoke to felt they were valued by the hospital management and was proud to be a nurse within their hospital.

We were very privileged to be able meet with the Chief Executive Officers and the Directors (Matron's) of each department in the hospital and to share our healthcare systems. To meet with our counterparts in the USA and to be able to share our profession ensured that they learnt from us as much as we learnt from them and this we both found to be an immensely valuable experience.

This opportunity took me out of my comfort zone. The confidence, team building and leadership skills i have gained will have a positive impact on my career, personal and professional development. This Exchange is definitely a once-in-a-life time opportunity that i would promote and recommend to any young professional.

Reflections of a Rotary Exchange

Having been home just over a week now it is fair to say not only am I missing the great southern hospitality, my great team mates, and warm weather well just about everyting about the exchange. Give me a case and plane ticket and I would be packed and ready in 10 minutes! ( Well may'be 20 mins it takes alot of consideration what to pack for a month in the states!).

Three twelve hour night shifts were enough to re-affirm my feet on English ground and to reflect on my exchange to South Carolina. So many great things to remember and great to keep in contact with friends through facebook and email.

I have been able to share with my colleagues some of the interesting differences in ER nursing I observed whilst on exchange and hope to implement some of the ideas I believe will benefit patient care in the department I work in. The vocational visits were immensley valuable in gaining an insight and understanding of my profession in another country so much so I am considering working abroad as part of my professional development.

I feel very privelledged to have met the vast variety of health professionals we were fortunate enough to meet and share with them our experiences of health care.

I have made many contacts I hope to network with to benefit both sides of the pond in terms of sharing professional information. It was also good to know that we share the same kind of challenges!

The leadership skills developed as being part of a team, time management and the public speaking endured on many an occasion with palpitations before my turn !Will be invaluable and no doubt follow me through my professional career and life! I feel very fortunate to have had the opportunity to be choosen for a Rotary exchange and would advocate it as a positive and life changing experience.

Friday night we had a great farewell party at Alison's house joined by host families, friends and rotarians we had met along the way including the out going 'GSE' team and Anne Walker District Governor. We were spoilt with the great food everyone had brought, and Marshall made the most delicous margaritas ( thanks for the headache the next day and for loaning me your umbrella during the very English like rain!). We were presentede with some gifts and made some farewell speeches. We all had a fab time but were sad knowing we were going home tommorow leaving the great state of SC and our 'awesome' new friends. Thank you all for the fantastic opportunity of GSE and making it such an amazing time.

Thursday: A previous Team Leader (no names mentioned) had told us it had not rained whilst he was in District 7770. But on Thursday we had 3.5 inches of rain - the normal total amount for the whole of April. A change of plans and whilst Steve went to meet the quality team at the Medical University of South Carolina (and returned weighed down with books) and Michelle went out with a nurse led home care team, Holly, Jane and Rodney visited the aircraft carrier USS Yorktown (Photo). Pat Campbell took us for an interesting visit to the exhibition and a break in the rain to visit the flight deck. A great party in the evening with "bring and share" food which would have fed the entire neighbourhood - joining members of the Rotary Club of East Cooper at the home of Paul and Anjie Curry.

Wednesday: In the morning we visited Berchtold Medical equipment manufacturers (Photo: The Team with Berchtold Marketing Director, Jim Wetzel) receiving a presentation about there operating theatre tables, lighting and equipment. During the tour of their manufacturing facility we were impressed by the commitment of their staff. Thanks to the Rotary Club of Summerville which hosted us for the day and for lunch where we gave a presentation. In the afternoon we met the Town Manager, Rotarian Dennis Pieper.

Friday: We attended the graduation of 450 US Marines on Parris Island - an impressive event watched by their family and friends who were able to greet them for the first time after their12-week initial training. In the afternoon we visited the Air Station Beaufort were Captain Chris Armes explained the role of the US Marine Air Support and the controls of the F18 fighter. Thursday: A sad farewell to our Hilton Head hosts and then two vocational visits: Belfair Retirement Community and then to the Palm Court Memory Clinic. We were entertained to lunch by Joanie Hayward in her home - The Pine House built in 1905-6 superbly furnished in keeping with the design, and overlooking Bluffton Creek (Photo). After lunch we then had a walking tour of Old Bluffton guided by Rtn Emmett McCracken. Then to be warmly greeted by our new hosts at Beaufort.

On Wednesday we were invited to the Gala dinner and an opportunity to meet the president of Rotary International D.K Lee. After a great meal and the opportunity to catch up with many Rotarian's we had met in the previous weeks, we were able to have photos taken with D.K and his wife. We all enjoyed this rare opportunity to meet the president.

Hilton Head Island Hospital

Today the group spent the day at Hilton Head Island Hospital, we were met by Kelly Presnell Director of Public Relations, Dean Turner Chief Operating Officer and Brad Talbert Vice President Development. They had many questions to ask us about our Health Service as we did them. After the tour of the hospital we all went our separate ways and spent the afternoon with our vocational counterpart, which everyone found to be very interesting. This was a fantastic club and interesting to hear the work that Ed is involved in organising the annual fundraising match. In the afternoon we were shown around Hilton Head Fire department by Jeff Hartberger. We had the opportunity to share different ideas about the way in which emergency care is provided. The team also had the chance to see the amount of equipment each firefighter has to carry, the girls found this particular aspect very interesting!

Today we visited the Hilton Head Town hall and we were made very welcome by the mayor Tom Peeples who presented us with a certificate declaring March 22nd to March 28th official 'Group Study Exchange week' in Hilton Head. First day in Hilton Head, we were entertained for lunch at Mary Noonan's house where the group met their host families. After lunch and our up dated schedule for the next few days, a walk along the beach was in order the beach was a few minutes from Mary's house she kindly drove us in her car the beach was beatuiful with warm clear sea. The locals think the sea is cold right now but that didn't stop me taking my shoes off and paddling in the sea which i thought was warm. Back to our host families for the evening before the busy schedule to start tomorrow.

We have now travelled up to Hilton Head Island which is just beautiful,we feel very lucky to be staying in such a beautiful place so close to the beach too. We were welcomed by a great lunch reception at Mary noonan's home. I have been bike riding on the beach this afternoon and have seen 4 alligators one being paticularly large and scary looking I was pleased to be on the other side of the lagoon using my zoom to get a closer shot!

Rotary International Awards

Saturday: It is unusual enough for two awards which are only presented to a maximum of 150 and 200 members of Rotary respectively out of a worldwide membership of over 1.2 million to be presented at the same dinner. For these two people to also be heavily involved in our Group Study Exchange visit is extraordinary. At the Conference Dinner Bill Greene who was Team Leader for the 2008 visit to District 1070 and GSE Coordinator for Myrtle Beach, received a Service Above Self Award. Paula Matthews who is our Columbia GSE Coordinator received a Rotary Foundation award for Meritorious Service having helped raise nearly one million dollars for Foundation in 2008. Congratulations to both our friends.

District 7770 Conference

Friday: To the District Conference for lunch at which Jeanne Robertson, past president of the National Speakers Association gave an outstanding talk. As they say "follow that", and after lunch!! The Team was next up to give our presentation - limited to 20 minutes we finished (just about) on time but the Chairman then allowed extra time for the many questions. We were followed by the 7770 Team which visited the UK last Autumn. The photo shows both teams together with District Governor Anne Walker.

Fort Jackson

Friday: Fort Jackson is the largest training base in the USA and undertakes basic training for 50% of all new US soldiers. The Fort has a 3 billion dollar per year impact on the local economy. Rotarian John Reener (Spring Valley) who was previously the General responsible for the base, and Rotarian Jim McHone who was previosly the Colonel responsible for the medical facilities were in our party which was shown round by Colonel Anita Dixon. Thursday: On the steps of the State House before a tour of the House of Representatives and Senate Chambers. We heard about Columbia being chosen as a "green field" site for the Capital and the city's history through the Civil War. We then attended a meeting of the Rotary Club of Spring Valley.

Palmetto Health, Columbia

Our first vocational visit in Columbia, Holly, Steve and Jane were in the hospital, Michelle was in the community. Holly and Jane spent the day in ER beginning in the Trauma unit were they saw three trauma's in 90minutes,which were perfect for them to watch how smoothly and efficently trauma's are run in USA. After lunch they observed in triage which was an eye opener they had eight triage rooms and two triage nurses seeing all the patients that come through the doors. Then on to the paediatric services the hospital has a seven storey Children's Hospital seeing more than 83,000 children each year. Steve spent the day with Quality which he found very informative. After all going the separate ways we met up at the end of the day with Regina Brown and Julian Gibbons who took care of us all day.

First Night in Columbia

Orangeburg

Was welcomed very warmly by our host families in Orangeburg, was taken to Sumter today to see the hospital, the hospital has many great features. One would be a very welcome idea in England, they have valet parking because it is a little walk to the carpark, you pull outside the main doors, the attendant parks for car for you and retrieves it when you are ready to leave. The hostpial was very spacious with all private rooms which were very well equiped like hotel rooms. On the way home after dropping Holly off, we had some spare time before we were all being collected so we called into the local radio station and was interviewed on air about why we are here and what we have been doing. We are now celebrities. Looking forward to the host meal tonight, and a day off tomorrow.

Southern hospitality

We have now moved on from Myrtle Beach and have a new home for a few weeks in Orangeburg. The sunny weather has also stayed in M.beach but the warm and friendly welcome has sure made up for that. We have had an interesting morning with a whistle stop tour of Toumey Hospital and the opportunity over lunch to discuss differences in NHS healthcare and American health care. We have many similarities but also many differences. Our lunch was walked off during a stroll round the swan lake iris gardens where we nearly got pecked by a nasty swan. We are looking forward to getting together later for a meal at a host families house.

Straight to work with a vocational visit to the nurse training facility at Orangeburg-Calhoun Technical College where we were welcomed by Dean of Nursing Delura Knight and Dean of Health Science Fran Andrews (pictured right above). Holly, Jane and Steve spent the day at Conway Hospital. Michelle spent the day at Mercy Hospice. Holly, Jane and Steve had a great day they started with breakfast, which looked like a scone with bacon and egg inside this apparently is called a egg and bacon biscuit. The hospital directors had many questions for us, we also had many for them but found we also had a lot of mutual problems with health care. We toured the new tower of the hospital the rooms designed for inidividual patients with an en-suite, plasma screen TV on the wall, fitted bedroom furniture it looked typical for a four star hotel in England. Holly and I spent the rest of the day assigned to a nurse in the ER which was very informative there computerised programmes were second to none.
Once we finished at 16.00 it was time for an hours shopping, before meeting with our host families and going to aquarium and then onto dinner at Liberty Steak house, where we were presented with T-Shirts for a golfing competition which is held in Myrtle Beach each year called "the Liar's Tournment" long story!!!!!!! Well another early day tomorrow being collected at 06.00. In need of beauty sleep!!!

Myrtle Beach Police Training Department

Monday - Jane Maddison points out the latest addition to the Myrtle Beach Police Department vehicle fleet seized from a drugs dealer. A great visit was organised by Police Sergeant Eric DiLorenzo who was a member of the GSE Team from South Carolina which toured District 1070 in September 2008. One of the highlights of the visit was a "Shoot - Don't Shoot" training simulation. One of our Team Members tried to shoot a "suspect" with his hands up.....but luckily she missed.
After our first formal presentation at the Rotary Club of Myrtle Beach, we attended the Horry County Court and during the recess met the Rotarian judge for a questions and answers session in his Chambers.

First day in South Carolina!

Slightly jet lagged but full of enthusiasm, we all spent some time this morning getting to know our host families. Some of us walked on Myrtle Beach, which was fantastic and so was the weather! Having lunch watching dolphins playing in the bay was the highlight.
This afternoon myself, Michelle and Holly visited the Brook Gardens seeing some sculptures in the gardens accompanied by members of local rotary clubs, whilst Jane had the chance for a game of golf. This evening we used our presentation for the first time, with some positive feedback. Tomorrow we are off to Myrtle Beach police department, which no doubt promises a few surprises.......

Today we had the first opportunity to try out our presentation to a recently formed Rotary Club in Leicester who made us feel very welcome. Its was great to meet up with the team and hear how the packing is going in preparation for the trip next week, and just how many shoes the girls are planning to take!

We had some great food to start with and a chance to meet some of the new Rotarian's. The presentation went smoothly and a credit to all the practice we had put in. At the end we had some feedback and a few hints to help us when presenting in South Carolina. On Sunday we are presenting to a larger group of Rotarian's, but think we all will feel a little less nervous.

Had as great meeting on sunday with the 'GSE' team members we had several practice runs of our presentation and were all pleased at how the presentatuion had taken shape. The trip seems to be building some momentum now and seems even more real than ever as we are recieving emails from our host families and have the schedules of the things we are going to be doing and places we are visiting. Our group polo shirts look great with the logo we designed embroidered on them and the scarves and ties a little colourful to say the least ! My work colleagues commented I look like an air hostess in mine !!!

Third Meeting

Today was our third meeting we all met in Bedford, so that an early morning start for Holly and I. Today was the day to have our photo's taken for the host country and for our presentation. We still managed a little bit of shopping. We were also treated to lunch was Steve's contacts at work. The presentation is coming on slowly and hopefully by the next meeting we will be pretty slick at our own individual parts!!!!!!!!!

We are now only 44 days from travelling and i am really looking forward to this wonderful opportunity.

Luckily we were able to speak to Mike Parry who had been to SC 3 years ago and he answered many of our questions, simple things like where do you get your washing done seems basic but when you are frequently moving around another country the simple things are no longer so simple. Our Second Meeting Jan 4th 09

Today has been our second meeting. Personally I felt it went very well, a little bit of shopping followed by lunch at Belton Woods Hotel with a very nice glass of red wine.

Seriously, we met at my work place which is an Accident and Emergency Dept and we tied up a lot of loose ends in the morning whilst we had coffee. After our lunch we got down to work and saw our presentation put together for the first time. Colin has worked very hard and I would like to say thank you to him for that. It was exciting to see the final product and I am looking forward to having a go and presenting it.

The most important part of the day for the ladies was shopping of course, we managed to choose our suits that we are going to wear for our presentations, three women, three suits in just under one hour how impressive.

Coffee and mince pies

Met up with Jane in Boston on wednesday had nice Coffee and festive mince pies, and got to know each other a bit better. We had a little look in next at the suits for some ideas. Will get together with Michele and hopefully chose something in Grantham after the next meeting. The black silk mini skirt jane choose and my input of a little sparkly top should look good and of course it will be a bit warmer when we go to South Carolina . . . . . . . . . . . . . Ha Ha joke !!! On a more serious note there was a few nice to suits to chose from well within budget. I look forward to meeting up with you all our next meeting and wish you all a lovely christmas with your family and friends.

First Meeting

A few wrong turns later and I have finally made it the first meeting with the group I will be travelling with to South Carolina. A warm welcome from Rodney and his wife followed by a great opportunity to meet everyone and have the chance to go over the detail of the trip. Having Colin there was a good opportunity to ask questions, having taken a group to Norway recently. The presentations gave us a insight into information we need to include and some of the interesting facts we had gathered will no doubt be an interesting talking point on our trip. Left the meeting looking forward to the next.

First Group Meeting

After a long drive and then having to navigate my way through the centre of a big city with only a Sat Nav for company i reached my destination. Full of apprenhension and excitement i was warmly welcomed by Rodney and his wife into their home and was offered a very much appreciated coffee and biscuits. The other members of the group started to arrive and it was nice to put faces to names. We were finally ready to start our first meeting, covering a lot of ground. It was very informative and was great to be able to see previous GSE presentations and speak to Colin who had previously taken a group to Norway. As the meeting progressed i felt so very lucky that i had been given this wonderful opportunity. Looking forward to our next meeting and getting to know the group better.

After a busy morning of christmas shopping at Highcross in Leicester it was great to be welcomed into Rodney and Pam's home where we met for our first Group Study Exchange meeting. After a great cup of coffee and biscuits it was down to buisness and all our questions and anxieties were reassured by Rodney and Colin. It was great to see previous groups presentations and what a great experience they had making me even more excited than before! It was nice to put faces to names in meeting the group and to realise that we all had something in common, and were all really looking forward to going to South Carolina on exchange. I look forward to our next meeting.

We have now selected our own team to visit D7770 in South Carolina and who will be travelling next April and May. They will be led by Rtn Rodney Spokes of the Rotary Club of Leicester and they are all healthcare professionals. The team are:

Michelle Anderson (Age 37, Community Staff Nurse supporting home care for patients, Peterborough PCT)
Steve Collins (Age 34, Head of Planning & Performance, Bedford Hospital)
Jane Maddison (Age 39, Nursing Sister, Grantham Accident and Emergency Department)
Holly Shaw (Age 28, Staff Nurse, Clinical Management, Boston)

The team got together for the first time today and so have started their training and they agreed to get together several times before the Exchange to learn about Rotary, prepare presentations and get to know each other. They will meet in future at their places of work so that they all get an understanding of each others roles. They are already planning some visits to clubs to practice their presentations before they go.
